You can perform conversions from any number system in the same way. Each position has a value based on it's distance from the . separating the whole portion from the fractional portion (decimal point in decimal). The position just to the left of this point is the 0th position, and this goes up as you move left and down as you move right, so:
1076.235
Position 3: 1
Position 2: 0
Position 1: 7
Position 0: 6
Position -1: 2
Position -2: 3
Position -3: 5
Each position's value is the base of the numbering system raised to the power of this position, so:
1*(x^3) + 0*(x^2) + 7*(x^1) + 6*(x^0) + 2*(x^-1) + 3*(x^-2) + 5*(x^-3)
so let's say this is an octal value:
1*(8^3) + 0*(8^2) + 7*(8^1) + 6*(8^0) + 2*(8^-1) + 3*(8^-2) + 5*(8^-3)
1*512 + 0*64 + 7*8 + 6*1 + 2*(1/8) + 3*(1/64) + 5*(1/512)
512 + 0 + 56 + 6 + 1/4 + 3/64 + 5/512
574 + 128/512 + 24/512 + 5/512
574 + 157/512
~574.306641 base 10 equals (approximately) 1076.235 base 8
Chances are the bases you'll deal with are 2,8,10, and 16. Even base 8 has fallen out of favor, but i guess it's worth working with. If you're doing this by hand, and you're moving between 2,8, and 16 there are some "tricks". Every octet is 3 bits, every hexit is 4 bits. Knowing this you can do conversions from either of these bases to base 2 or back again pretty quickly and easily with grouping. Note that between 2,8, and 16 you can exactly represent anything from one of these bases in one of the others. This isn't so with base 10, so we end up making approximations because converting from one of the other bases to base 10 can give us an irrational number, and some decimal numbers with a fractional part cannot be represented in binary at all, so they have to be estimated.

*scratches North Dakota off list of states in the U.S. I can live*
.
have you ever been to north dakota? There are more reasons besides this that would encourage me to live somewhere else.
I've been there, and it sucks. North Dakota is the embodiment of everything that invokes upsetting emotions while watching the movies "napoleon dynamite" and "gentlemen broncos"... If you've been there, you know what I mean

oh my god, superdirve and bluetooth?
who ever thought of that as a rumor for the upcoming powerbook:p
macworld had a thing on bluetooth being the future for the next generation macs and there must be dozens of posters here calling for a superdrive in a powerbook
these things probably all need to happen before we see either a dual G4 powerbook or, later on, a G5 powerbook
i don't want to wait til late-2003 or early-2004 to get bluetooth and superdrive as a new thing when the G5 powerbook most likely will be announced, if they even call the post-g4 laptop that

the more the better!
eagerly awaiting Aperture 3.1 to speed a few things up and please add pinch zoom for the MBP users, even Lightroom has pinch zoom.
I'm happy with the new Aperture but these tiny little things can be improved.
There is pinch zoom in the browser view and while working with Faces, just not while editing a picture.
IMHO, pinch zoom gets in my way more often than not. I find myself accidentally triggering it while dragging a selection in Faces or the browser. I strongly prefer more intentional control over something like that in a pro photo package ...
That having been said, it would be nice to be an option.

Like I said, unfortunately it may not be isolated to DP2 ... which is more annoying since that means it's probably an iTunes/iOS bug :(
Oh my bad, I thought it was only happening on your 10.7 machine. If it is happening on your other machines I would think an iTunes bug.

Do I call Rogers up (my carrier) and tell them?
1. Call roggers to cancel/deactivate your #s.
2. Buy new phone and move on with your life.

Unfortunately i would go ahead and say to see if you could get a new macbook. Of course you should bring it to an Apple store and see how much it would be to get them to fix it... if it isn't too much I'd get it fixed but... the MBPs are really nice.

I heard you just wasted 5 minutes of my life. Had to respond to even make that time worth it.
Yeah. Same, instead of actually wasting my time, I'm going to say no.
There will be no red iPhone Pro released anytime soon. Certainly not this year.

Geez - that's weird. I though forums like this were for asking questions and getting help. Seriously - your posts have been a BIG help.
JimMacFan - to answer your question: The 27" screen is 17.9" tall without the stand. The total height is 20.5" I believe which would put the stand under 3 inches.

i was curious now and looked up google and look what i found ..that was the pippin
http://doomlaser.com/images/pippin.jpg
and there exists even a museum for it
http://www.macgeek.org/museum/pippin/
ok i was wrong with os 8 but .... if i read that info of the museums site right it really was a macintosh in the wrong market and it could be used to access the world wide web , and surprise it could be connected to a television like the mini today , had this been marketed right as a mini macintosh with a harddrive and more ram it could have been the grandfather of the mini , so it was a product in the wrong market no wonder it didn't sell

I think Adam Iser and Evan Schoenberg and the rest of the Adium gang deserve some serious props here....outside of the apple aps, firefox, and MS Office, Adium is my most used piece.

I'm having this problem with my relatively new (3 months) iBook. After it's been woken from sleep mode, the keyboard won't work for a minute or so. It'll work if the iBook's been open during sleep mode and I wake it up using the keyboard, but if I wake it from being closed or I wake it with the mouse, the keyboard doesn't function for a short period of time. Help?
Couple questions...during this time, does the mouse work? When you say "minute," do you mean 5-8 seconds, or do you really mean a minute?
My iBook takes about that much time (5-8 seconds) to get an Airport connection, and during that time, the mouse and keyboard are both initially non-responsive.... And I think that's normal. But I'm not sure if that's what you're describing.

I find a p&s is invaluable in a theme park with kids. You really don't have time to mess with settings and the last thing you want to do is worry about your camera. I have a zs3 (tz-7?) and find the long zoom and wide angle perfect for all kinds of shots. The one-touch video button helps too because there is often some action you want to catch. Versatility is key for me in that kind of situation.

I have seen it mentioned by other folders, but I have no idea where to begin. I imagine it's similar to building a home server, but I have never done that before either.
I'm asking because I have some old 'puter parts lying around doing nothing useful at the moment, that I thought I could build into something that would sit in a quiet corner of the house and fold.
Any suggestions?
